Will You Trust God To Heal Your Wounded Heart?
What Does It Mean To Trust God?
To trust God means to seek refuge, flee for protection, to put trust in, to confide in and hope in God. You’re probably asking yourself – “how can I trust God to heal my wounded heart!? Clearly, He saw what happened to me. He knows I was sexually abused!”
Have you wrestled with this question too? You are not alone.
In addition, I had more questions and even accusations towards God.
- How can anyone trust in You!?
- Where were YOU!?
- Why ME!?
- What did I do to deserve this!?
- Why didn’t You do something!?
- How could You let this happen!?
- I was only a child!!
- I HATE that I was born!!
- You can’t be a loving God!!
- You are NOT a Heavenly Father!!
The pain you have endured leads you to question God. However, God knows you have questions and He knows you want answers. He answers many of your questions in the Scriptures and at times He doesn’t answer. Do not lose heart. He is not ignoring you. He just might want you to draw nearer to Him.
Trust Issues
Trust is a huge issue for those of us who were betrayed by those we trusted most. For that reason, we lose trust by way of abuse, in anyone and everyone, and yes, including God. Therefore, we withdraw and isolate. So we become angry, hateful, rebellious, even vengeful. Furthermore, we are left to fend for ourselves and our own negative thoughts. Thoughts of ways we could have fought back or done something differently. For example – “if only I didn’t freeze!… if only I didn’t wear that!… if only!...”
In spite of what happened to us, we blame ourselves and wonder if we caused this evilness upon us. The truth is NO! Certainly not! However, we live in a fallen, evil and wicked world and that evilness and wickedness dwelling within that perverted person is what made them do this abominable act to us. But we need to place shame where it belongs – on them. Above all, they are to shame, not us.
Trust issues was at the top of my list and it was not a place I was willing to let Him in. For instance, I believed God was responsible for my childhood being robbed from me. Many nights I wrestled with God and my anger. At the same time, I knew I needed to let go of this sinful anger towards a Holy and Righteous God and stop accusing Him. So, with an overwhelmed heart I asked Jesus to forgive me for harboring these emotions towards God, to show me how to trust Him, and openly receive the Lord’s love. And He did.
Trust God to Restore You
Most of us who were sexually abused have had a clouded view of God. Consequently, abuse distorts our image of God and affects our ability to seek and trust God. Nevertheless, God desires you to seek Him and trust Him Matthew 7:7-8.
Total surrender of your pain and hurt opens a door for God’s restoration to begin in you. A personal relationship between you and the Lord. Not only does God want to restore you to Himself, He desires to comfort you too! Matthew 5:4
God Answers
Now, remember all the questions and accusations I had towards God? Well, as I read the Scriptures I was able to see that I can trust God! The bible talks about holding every thought captive 2 Corinthians 10:5. Therefore, I had to replace my doubts of God with truths:
- How can anyone trust in You!?
- Trust Him with all your heart, seek Him, and He will direct your path. Proverbs 3:5 (NLT)
- Where were YOU!?
- He watches everyone closely and examines them and hates those who love violence. Psalm 11:4-5 (NLT)
- Why ME!?
- Indeed, God did not condone this abominable abuse. Proverbs 6:16-19
- What did I do to deserve this!?
- Though you have been grieved by various trials, trials show your precious genuine faith. 1 Peter 1:6-7
- Why didn’t You do something!?
- But God will avenge you. Romans 12:19
- How could You let this happen!?
- Although Satan’s purpose is to destroy you, God’s purpose for you is to live life abundantly. John 10:10
- I was only a child!!
- Moreover, woe to the one who follows through in temptation to sin against a child. Luke 17:1-2
- I HATE that I was born!!
- Before I was born, God knit me in my mothers womb. I’m fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:13-14
- You can’t be a loving God!!
- Because of Jesus’ death on the Cross we were adopted to be daughters of a loving God. Ephesians 1:5
- You are NOT a Heavenly Father!
- Due to being adopted by God as daughters, we can cry out to Him, Abba Father! Galatians 4:6 (NLT)
You may have likewise questions and you may have others. However, there are no questions too hard for God to answer. He answers many questions in the Scriptures. Are you ready to begin to trust God to heal your wounded heart?
Jesus is the Source of Healing
Throughout my fifteen years of knowing the Lord, pouring out my heart to Him, learning of Him and getting into the Scriptures and knowing Him more intimately, all the accusatory questions didn’t matter anymore. Without a doubt, God wanted a spiritual transformation to take place in my heart.
In addition to this, He wanted me to draw near to Him. Not only that, but the closer I got to the Lord, the less important my questions were. At the same time He quieted my heart. Unbeknownst to me, He was drawing me near to Him with his unfailing love Jeremiah 31:3.
Above all, it’s important to understand that Jesus is the source of our healing. He can heal a wounded heart. He is close to the brokenhearted Psalm 34:18. Certainly no one can heal your wounds except the Lord!
At this time will you trust God? Will you trust God to heal your wounded heart?
PRAYER: Lord, please let my sister in Christ know she is not in this walk alone. May she begin to trust You and Your Word to heal her wounded heart. Let her study the Scriptures and may she take comfort in them. May she depend on Jesus, your Son, as the source of her healing. Amen.
Until He makes all things new Revelation 21:4-5.
